The Federal Government through the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe Explained why stopping the Non - Nigerian Herdsmen from grazing seems to be a difficult task to accomplished.
While speaking at the Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Grazing Reserves and Stock Routes in Abuja on Thursday, Chief Audu made it clear that the ECOWAS Transhumance Protocol is the main reason why FG has been incapacitated on the Fulani Herdsmen issue. According to him, the protocol gives right of free movement to every citizen of countries that belongs to ECOWAS.
According to him, "it is not strange to see a Malian, Burkinabe or Nigerien pastoralist
grazing his cows, sheep or goats in Nigeria or a Nigerian pastoralist
grazing his livestock in Benin, Togo or Ghana and by extension,
transhumance pastoralists from other neighbouring countries,”
Ogbe however cited the grazing reserves as a way to settle transhumance pastoralists and reduce/eliminate crop farmer-pastoralist conflicts.
